Amsterdam, 14 april 2025  – De kattenopvang van de Palestijnse Maryam Barq, bekend als \u201cThe Cat Lady of Gaza\u201d<\/em>, is zondagavond gebombardeerd. Tijdens de aanval moest de familie dekking zoeken terwijl kogels door muren en plafonds vlogen en explosieven op hun huis insloegen. <\/strong><\/p>\n

Maryam had er bewust voor gekozen om in het oorlogsgebied te blijven om te zorgen voor 65 geredde en gehandicapte katten. In de paniek wist Maryam met vijf katten te vluchten naar een iets veiligere locatie. Haar vader bleef achter om de overige katten te beschermen, uit vrees dat het vliegtuig zou terugkeren. De situatie is kritiek.<\/p>\n

Dankzij de steun van de Nederlandse hulporganisatie Animal Heroes<\/a> is het Maryam sinds het begin van de oorlog gelukt om haar katten te blijven voeren door lokaal voer in te kopen. De prijzen zijn onbetaalbaar geworden, maar zolang twee zendingen met voer en medicijnen van Animal Heroes vaststaan aan de grens met Egypte, is dit de enige manier om de dieren in leven te houden.<\/p>\n

Twee dagen voor de aanval stuurde Maryam nog een verontrustend bericht:
\n\u201cIk ben niet bang voor mezelf, mijn enige angst is dat het leger het huis zal aanvallen en het zal platbranden \u2013 samen met de katten \u2013 want het leger is begonnen met een nieuwe strategie: alles wat ze tegenkomen verbranden \u2013 mens, dier of boom. Daarom ben ik zo bezorgd over mijn katten. Ik kan me niet voorstellen dat mijn katten zouden sterven door vuur of bombardementen.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Esther Kef, oprichter van Animal Heroes, maakt zich ernstig zorgen:
\n\u201cMaryam is een jonge vrouw die nauwelijks nog kan lopen door het verlies van spiermassa als gevolg van ernstige ondervoeding. Ze is al maanden duizelig en heeft nierproblemen ontwikkeld. Ze leeft op brood en linzen, en zelfs het brood is al weken op. Wij kunnen ons hier in Nederland niet voorstellen hoe het is om zo te leven. Nu kijken we machteloos toe hoe een jonge moedige collega-dierenbeschermer langzaam aan het sterven is.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n
