Our foodtruck is in Egypt, waiting to be able to cross into Gaza. In the meantime, our medical response team and Maryam’s cats in North Gaza need your help.
4,000 kg of food
Food and medicine for animals
Gaza
Start campaign: 27 / 8 / 2024
Departure truck: 15 / 10 / 2024 - On Hold
As violence and destruction continue to disrupt daily life in Gaza, animals have become some of the most vulnerable victims. Especially donkeys and horses are among the animals that suffer the most in Gaza.
Why do animals in Gaza suffer?
We have a local medical team in Gaza that offers free medical assistance in a pop-up clinic for donkeys, horses, stray animals, and pets displaced due to the war. Our team has completely run out of food and though limited medicine are still available, prices are extremely high.
After 9 months of planning and preparation to send aid into Gaza, we have launched the Animals in Gaza Alliance, a collaboration between animal aid organisations with experience in running complex emergency aid operations in the Middle East. The Alliance provides an infrastructure in and outside Gaza that enables us to send our first aid shipment.
The founding members of the Animals in Gaza Alliance are:
Together, we are positive that we can offer structural relief to the animals in Gaza during one of the hardest times in the region’s history.
Even though there are still factors outside of our control, such as very little aid coming in, expected delays at the border, it paves the way for structural relief to animals in one of the most challenging times in the region’s history.

Our first shipment to Gaza was scheduled to depart from Egypt in mid-September, but the floodgates at Gaza crossing are now not expected to open until the ceasefire. Our shipment is ready to depart from Cairo, but is still waiting for a signal from the Egyptian Red Crescent to be able to depart. We will ship 4,000 kg of aid which will be distributed to:
You can donate as little as 1 euro because every euro counts. (choose adjusted donation and choose the amount you wish to donate)
To minimise transport costs we bought the food directly in Egypt at the following prices:
A 20 kg bag of dried cat food costs €49,81 (€2,49/kg)
A 20 kg bag of dried dog food costs €46,78 (€2,34/kg)
A 50 kg bag of dry horse/donkey food costs €43,63 (€0,87/kg)
While the truck is on hold, our medical response team in Gaza is still operating free pop-up clinics to help donkeys, horses and pets from displaced Palestinian. Limited medical supplies are available, but prices are extremely high. That is why it is important that the foodtruck will be able to cross asap. In the meantime, please support our medical response team to buy the little food and medicine for animals that is currently still available in Gaza.

In addition to our food shipment and our own team on the ground, we support Maryam, a brave young lady from North Gaza who decided not to evacuate because she cares for 65 rescue cats that could not come with her.
We have found a secure way to send money directly into her account, which we have been doing for the past months. Thanks to this, her cats are still alife, but the situation in North Gaza is unimaginably tragic. While the cats eat proper catfood, Maryam and her family have been suffering famine for nearly a year.
They survive on beans and bread and suffer from severe vitamine shortage. They are under constant bombing but despite this, everytime our money reaches her account, Maryam risks her life to go out and buy food for the cats.
We are a European animal emergency aid organisation based in Amsterdam. Animal Heroes aims to support local animal heroes – people who care for animals in the most difficult circumstances – with fast and efficient emergency aid. We have completed aid missions following wars, earthquakes, floods, and forest fires in Lebanon, Turkey, Ukraine, Italy, Greece, and the West Bank.

Despite the combined expertise, the carefully planned aid mission and tested infrastructure of the Animals in Gaza Alliance, the situation is unprecedented and highly unpredictable. Some factors are outside our control that can impact our aid mission. Nevertheless, we decided to send our first shipment, because the alternative is doing nothing, which is not an option for us. Every day we do nothing, not only people, but also animals suffer and die in Gaza.
However, this mission is more challenging than any of our previous missions in for example Ukraine and the Westbank. Therefore, we have decided to share with you the risks that we have identified and the strategies that we have implemented to mitigate these risks:

We have a local emergency response team in Gaza. Normally we always visit our projects personally, because we believe that is the best way to understand the situation and the need for emergency aid. However, at the moment we are not going to Gaza, because it is too risky to either get kidnapped or killed. Without food and medicine available there is not much we could do on the ground. The most important thing we can do for animals now is to get aid across the border.
Yes, we plan to start structural aid for as long as needed.
A prior shipment containing medicine for animals was refused at the border earlier this year. To minimise the risk of our shipment being refused at the border, we have decided to send only food on the first shipment. For the second transport we aim to include also medicine.
In principle no, because it would cost too much to ship goods from Europe or the USA to Egypt. However, if you are a company that wants to donate 20 pallets of food or more, we can evaluate the possibility of shipping goods to either Egypt or Israel for delivery in Gaza.
We will not be able to restitute your donation, because we will incur costs in starting this operation. What will happen to your donation for the animals in Gaza, depends on the situation and is explained in the section above ‘Important Information’.
We have worked for nine months to set up an aid project in Gaza, which has proven to be highly complex. Safe Haven for Donkeys is the only organisation that managed to get food into Gaza for strays, pets, horses and donkeys. The shipment had to wait 4 months at the border, but eventually reached Sulala Animal Rescue in April of 2024. Therefore, combining our strengths and resources, we are now confident that we can deliver aid through the newly established Animals in Gaza Alliance.
It is thanks to Safe Havens for Donkeys that we are able to do this now. Talks are underway about a ceasefire, but no one knows if it will happen, when it might occur, or how long such a ceasefire will last. Emergency aid will then be able to cross the border more quickly, so we need to be well-prepared for our first shipment, in the hope that we can send more aid afterwards.
At Animal Heroes we only work with volunteers who do not receive any financial compensation. We also don’t have offices, and we don’t send printed material to our donors. Our overheads are therefore incredibly low. However, we do have fixed costs to maintain our website, software licenses and to pay bank costs. A maximum of 15% will be used to cover the running costs, including administration, project costs, and bank fees.
Yes, we are a registered charity, with an ANBI status based in Amsterdam. We also have an operational office in Italy and an international team consisting of professionals from nine different countries who dedicate their free time to help animals in need.
