Help feed Maryam’s cats in North Gaza

Maryam Hasan cares for 65 cats in North Gaza. Her situation has become critial over the past month. She has been surviving on beans and bread for a year now. The lack of food is slowly taking its toll on her family and on her 65 cats.

More than 10,000 euro collected

Thanks to your donations, we have been able to collect over 10,000 euro for Maryam. This money has used to feed her 65 cats buying catfood at extremely high prices in North Gaza.
Maryam says:

“I’m losing my health. I suffer from malnutrition and wonder when dehydration will hit. I can’t take care of my cats because I’m so weak. I don’t know what to do—everything is closed, and I feel lost. My strength is collapsing, and I need donations desperately. Thank you.”

Update August 2025 – Project closed

Maryam had to evacuate her house in July 2025. According to her, she and her neighbours did not get any warning before heavy bombing started.

She managed to take 6 cats with her, the rest (about 40 that were still alive) she had to leave behind. A month later she managed to get back to her house and it was completely destroyed and she has not found any cats alive.

That’s why we have closed this aid project, as there is no shelter left. We still continue to help her Maryam though. If you wish to donate for the care of Maryam’s remaining 6 cats, you can do so via her Facebook page that offers an Animal Heroes donation link.

FAQ

1. Can I also donate directly through a bank transfer?

Yes you can. Our bank details are:

If you donate through the bank, unfortunately, we won’t be able to send you a thank-you note, as the bank does not provide us with your contact information. We also won’t be able to keep you informed about our projects.

Would you still like to stay updated? Then please send us an email at info@animalheroes.nl or follow us on Facebook and/or Instagram via @animalheroes.eu.

2. Are you sending a team to Gaza?

We have a local emergency response team in Gaza. Normally we always visit our projects personally, because we believe that is the best way to understand the situation and the need for emergency aid. However, at the moment we are not going to Gaza, because it is too risky to either get kidnapped or killed. Without food and medicine available there is not much we could do on the ground. The most important thing we can do for animals now is to get aid across the border.

3. Are you going to send more aid?

Yes, we plan to start structural aid for as long as needed.

4. Can I donate goods instead of money?

In principle no, because it would cost too much to ship goods from Europe or the USA to Egypt and at the moment our food shipment is stock in Egypt, not yet allowed to cross.

5. If anything happens to Maryam, what will happen to my donation?

We will not be able to restitute your donation, because we will have sent her the money into her account. If any of the donations have not been sent, it will be used for our other aid projects in Gaza.

6. How much of my donation actually goes to help Maryam’s cats in North Gaza?

100% of your donation will be sent to Maryam. However, not all of this money will reach the cats. Banks are closed, and merchants only accept cash. Exchange offices charge up to 25% of commission in order to get cash.

7. Is Animal Heroes a registered charity with an ANBI-status?

Yes, we are a registered charity, with an ANBI status based in Amsterdam. We also have an operational office in Italy and an international team consisting of professionals from nine different countries who dedicate their free time to help animals in need.
