About our mission in Gaza

As violence and destruction continue to disrupt daily life in Gaza, animals have become some of the most vulnerable victims. Especially donkeys and horses are among the animals that suffer the most in Gaza.

Why do animals in Gaza suffer?

  • Life-saving donkeys have replaced cars and lorries and are the only means of transport for many people, They are forced to carry heavy building materials, wounded and dead people around Gaza. At the same time they are weakened due to a lack of food, dehydration and excruciating wounds,
  • Thousands of dogs and cats are starving,
  • There are hardly any medicine for animals.

Our medical response team in Gaza

We have a local medical response team on the ground in Gaza that offers free medical assistance in a pop-up clinic for donkeys, horses, strays, and pets that are displaced due to the war. Our team is led by our colleague A’aed Abu Nejem who is a 5th year veterinary student from Gaza who is supported by our colleague Dr. Jenny Mckay, a senior veterinary doctor from the UK.

Our team has completely run out of food and though limited medicine are still available, prices are extremely high.

Awareness campaign for owners of donkeys and horses

In addition to the pop-up clinics, our team in Gaza has started an awareness campaign to educate horse and donkey owners on basic animal care in the face of resource scarcity. The campaigns aims to reduce abuse by increasing the owner’s knowledge of the needs of their animals and the importance of their welfare.

FAQ

1. Can I also donate directly through a bank transfer?

Yes you can. Our bank details are:
Bank: Triodos
Sort-code: 16-58-10
Name: Stichting Animal Heroes
Account number: NL57TRIO0320595846
Description: Medical Team – Gaza

If you donate through the bank, unfortunately, we won’t be able to send you a thank-you note, as the bank does not provide us with your contact information. We also won’t be able to keep you informed about our projects.

Would you still like to stay updated? Then please send us an email at info@animalheroes.nl or follow us on Facebook and/or Instagram via @animalheroes.eu.

2. Are you sending a team to Gaza?

We have a local emergency response team in Gaza. Normally we always visit our projects personally, because we believe that is the best way to understand the situation and the need for emergency aid. However, at the moment we are not going to Gaza, because it is too risky to either get kidnapped or killed. Without food and medicine available there is not much we could do on the ground. The most important thing we can do for animals now is to get aid across the border.

3. Are you going to send more aid?

Yes, we plan to start structural aid for as long as needed.

4. Can I donate goods instead of money?

In principle no, because it would cost too much to ship goods from Europe or the USA to Egypt and at the moment our food shipment is stock in Egypt, not yet allowed to cross.

5. What happens if your Medical Response Team can no longer operate?

We will not be able to restitute your donation, because most likely we will have already sent your donation to the Medical Response Team in Gaza. In case any of the donations have not been sent yet and our team is no longer able to operate, it will be used for a similar aid project.

6. How much of my donation actually goes to help animals in Gaza?

At Animal Heroes, we only work with volunteers who do not receive financial compensation. We also have no offices, and as a modern organization, we do not send printed materials to our donors. Therefore, our overhead costs are extremely low.

However, we do have fixed costs for maintaining our website, software licenses, and paying bank fees.

A maximum of 15% is used to cover ongoing costs, including administration, project expenses, and bank fees.

7. Is Animal Heroes a registered charity with an ANBI-status?

Yes, we are a registered charity, with an ANBI status based in Amsterdam. We also have an operational office in Italy and an international team consisting of professionals from nine different countries who dedicate their free time to help animals in need.
