Who is Joke?
Joke van der Post is a Dutch veterinary assistant who lives in Egypt. She runs a shelter and a veterinary clinic for abused and neglected horses and donkeys.
Death threats
Joke was recently in the news after she intervened in the mistreatment of a donkey. Since then, she has received daily death threats from men and Egypt. Despite personal risks – including arrest and possible imprisonment – she remains determined to fight for animal welfare in an environment where it is anything but self-evident.
The shelter
Joke has 61 horses and donkeys in her shelter and her team also treats 50 to 80 animals a day in their veterinary clinic.
Why does Joke need support?
Due to the war in Gaza, aid organisations have bought large quantities of medicines in Egypt. As a result, prices are now 4 times more expensive. Joke had to sell her house to continue to support the animals, but the reserves are running out.
How can you help?
Last week her X-ray machine broke down. A new device costs 15,000 euros and that money is not there. Despite all the problems for her own safety, Joke is most worried about her animals. She is in urgent need of a new X-ray machine in order to relief the suffering of so many exploited horses and donkeys.
This project is now completed; we raised a total of €11,526. Joke also received donations herself and purchased a new X-ray machine for €19,000 on Sunday, May 4, 2025. A big thank you to all the donors who made this possible.
