The past few days have been intense, overwhelming and, at times, deeply emotional. Thanks to your support, we have been able to take immediate action in Spain for animals affected by the devastating wildfires.
Together, we have now raised more than €20,000. An incredible amount that we are enormously grateful for.
We have used these funds to immediately purchase emergency food for birds, deer, wild boar, goats, donkeys and other animals that have lost their natural habitat to the fires. We have also purchased our first lorry-load of hay and established a local network with volunteers, trusted suppliers and forest management authorities. This means we can quickly provide hay and other food supplies over the coming weeks and months, ensuring that they are fairly distributed to the animals that need them most.
During this trip, we also met Axel and his wife, Amelia. For almost their entire lives, they had been creating a beautiful botanical garden with more than 1,700 different trees and plants from around the world. The wildfires destroyed approximately 90% of their life’s work.
Their property was not only a paradise for plants, but also a safe haven for rescued animals. Thankfully, many of the animals survived the fire, but the roofs of several of their enclosures completely melted.
That is why our colleague Lucas will soon travel to Spain at his own expense to help rebuild and repair the enclosures. Building materials are still urgently needed to make this possible.
Onze hulp gaat door
De crisis is helaas nog niet voorbij. De komende twee tot drie maanden zullen veel dieren afhankelijk blijven van noodvoer. Pas na de eerste regenval zal de natuur zich langzaam herstellen en kunnen veel dieren weer zelf voedsel vinden.
Daarom blijven wij samen met onze lokale contactpersoon Alexandra, Axel, het bosbeheer en de lokale vrijwilligers wekelijks of tweewekelijks voedsel inkopen en verspreiden. Daarnaast hopen we nog €3.000 extra in te zamelen voor bouwmaterialen, zodat de beschadigde dierenverblijven kunnen worden hersteld.
In de media
Onze noodactie kreeg de afgelopen week veel aandacht in de landelijke media. Dat heeft enorm geholpen om aandacht te vragen voor de situatie van de dieren én om de eerste noodhulp mogelijk te maken.
Zo verscheen er een uitgebreid artikel in De Telegraaf, waarin we vertellen over onze missie naar het rampgebied in Spanje. Daarnaast waren we te zien in een reportage van Hart van Nederland. Ook besteedde het NOS Radio 1 Journaal aandacht aan onze noodhulpactie. Hier kun je het radio interview terugluisteren vanaf 1:08:45.
Zo besteden we jouw donatie
We vinden het belangrijk dat je kunt volgen wat er met jouw donatie gebeurt. Daarom zullen we met regelmaat het actuele financieel overzicht van alle ontvangen donaties en uitgaven, inclusief de bonnetjes van de aankopen updaten.
Daarnaast uploadt Alexandra de komende weken en maanden rechtstreeks vanuit Spanje nieuwe foto’s en video’s van de noodhulp. Zo kun je zelf volgen hoe het project verloopt en zien welke impact jouw steun heeft.
