Joke van der Post is a Dutch veterinary nurse from Purmerend who lives in Egypt and is committed to rescuing and caring for donkeys. She runs a shelter and veterinary clinic for abused and neglected horses and donkeys.

Death threats

Joke made the news in 2025 after she intervened in the mistreatment of a donkey. Since then, she has been receiving death threats from men in Egypt. Despite the personal risks, she remains determined to promote animal welfare in an environment where this is anything but self-evident.

The shelter

Joke has 70 horses and donkeys in her shelter, and on busy days her team treats 80 to 100 animals a day in their veterinary clinic.
